WHEN WE FINISH THE RACE?

Birthdays are a reminder of how quickly time passes, especially after the age of thirty or so. When I began “feeling my age” I pictured life and the passing of time to be like this: My childhood growing up time passed as if I were hiking up a mountain in Vermont or Colorado, somewhat slow. Then, when I reached college and then marriage it was as if I were on top of the mountain and putting on skies to start down. As I reached my thirties I was speeding down the mountain. When the forties and fifties came along time was flying by like a blur of trees in the eyes of a speed demon skier. A few of my contemporaries have already reached the bottom of the mountain.

What really matters when time, as we know it, runs out? What will matter to me when my run is over? Will I cherish the thrilling and exciting moments that just whizzed on by, or will I treasure the people who have enriched and enlivened my life? Will I cherish the things I have achieved or acquired, or will I treasure the love I have experienced and expressed with my family, friends and church? Will I drag with me any garbage across the finish line, grudges and hurt feelings that should have been discarded long ago? Will I harbor any regrets of missed opportunities to do more for others in the name of Christ? Will I look back and see that our children have not been misled too much by yours truly? Will I be ashamed of myself as a Christian husband and father? More importantly, what will God say when I finish the race? Perhaps we would be much better spouses and parents if we paused every birthday to answer such questions and recommit our lives to Christ!

Love,
Paul
