Disaster Relief volunteers cut up and remove fallen trees and other debris from a neighborhood in Americus, Georgia following a tornado that devastated the area.

Local Relief Efforts

The Disaster Relief Ministry at First Baptist Church is well on its way in becoming a tool that can be used to meet the needs of others when in time of overwhelming circumstances.  Many are already trained and can leave to serve when disaster strikes.

Our most recent ministry was sending a nine member team to Americus, Georgia in support of the tornado relief efforts in the area.  The team was in Americus from June 11 through June 13.  The team was able to work together on many projects and split up to help finish others.  The team worked on restoring a home by trimming shingles, installing vinyl siding, replacing damaged wood and general clean up.  Ladies from the team worked in Habitat for Humanity's food closet organizing and building food boxes, cleaning supply boxes and hygiene boxes that will be handed out as needed.  Team members even spent part of a day scraping and painting a picket fence.  All of the recipients of our help were very grateful and expressed their gratitude often.  There are still 40 houses that are in need of repair before they can be made livable again.  This ministry is just another rewarding experience spending a few days and a little labor for the Lord.

PS - It rained a little, it was warm and there were a few gnats!!!

If you are interested in joining the Disaster Relief team, please contact the Activities Ministry office at (706) 884-5570.  SBC Disaster Relief Training Events are held regularly each January, February and March.

We are still in the process of equipping the new Disaster Relief trailer to transport equipment to and from work sites.  We are now accepting donations of new and “slightly” used tools for the disaster relief effort.  New tools can be purchased at Home Depot as a “gift” for the First Baptist Church Disaster Relief effort.
